An AI SEO agent is software that does the SEO loop without you doing each step: it finds what to write from your search data, writes the article, publishes it to your site and measures the result, then refreshes what is not working. The difference from an AI writer is that an agent acts on your site and your data. A good one still leaves the final "make it live" to a person.

By Yaniv Mizrahi, founder of TalkGenAI. Numbers on this page come from our own site, 4MeNearMe.com, and our own tests, October 2026.

What does an AI SEO agent actually do?

Six steps, in a loop. Each one is a dashboard button and an MCP tool in TalkGenAI:

Six steps: Marketing Brain, Content plan, Write, Draft on your site, Measure, Refresh, with the MCP tool for each
The loop, by hand or by agent.
Step What happens Tool
1. Know the business What you sell and do not sell, your brand voice get_company_brain
2. Plan Which articles to write, with keyword, outline and search volume get_content_plan
3. Write A full article: headings, FAQ with schema, meta, internal links, optional hero image generate_article
4. Publish Saved to WordPress as a draft publish_article
5. Measure Google positions and visits from AI assistants get_rankings, get_report
6. Refresh Rewrite what is not working, push it to the same post refine_article, update_live_post

What kinds of "SEO agents" are out there?

The term covers very different products. In the top Google results for "seo agent" in October 2026 we found:

Type What you get Fits
Agency service sold as an agent People plus AI, priced like an agency (one top result starts at $5,000 a month) Companies that want to hand off SEO completely
Audit and research agents Finds technical issues and keyword gaps, reports them Teams that already have writers (content optimizers fit here too; see our Surfer SEO alternative page)
Writing and publishing agents Writes the article and puts it on your site Small teams with no writer
Build-your-own You wire Claude or another model to tools yourself Developers who want full control

TalkGenAI is the third kind, and you can drive it as the fourth through MCP. If you want to see the research-type tools, our SEO MCP servers comparison groups them by job.

How do I run one by hand, from the dashboard?

  1. Connect your WordPress site (Connect WordPress).
  2. Let the Marketing Brain read your site for the business context and brand voice (Marketing Brain).
  3. Create a content plan: a month of articles with keyword, volume, difficulty and an outline for each.
  4. Write a card now, or give it a date. The plan has an auto-publish setting: off, or to a site you pick.
  5. Check the Measure tab each month.

How do I run one from my own AI agent?

Connect Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or OpenClaw with an agent key (Connect your AI agent), then talk to it. In our run on 4MeNearMe.com, one request led Claude to read the brand voice, write a 1,230-word article with a hero image (8 credits), and save it as a WordPress draft. The full transcript is in the WordPress MCP guide, and a research-first version is in how to use Claude for SEO.

What should an SEO agent not do alone?

Two things, both learned on our own site:

  1. Decide that a topic is new. Our agent wrote "Food Truck Insurance Checklist" and published the draft. WordPress gave it the slug food-truck-insurance-2, because a live page on that topic already existed. It was written before the site used TalkGenAI, so list_articles returned nothing. Two pages on one keyword compete with each other.
  2. Go live. Agent publishing in TalkGenAI saves a draft unless the request explicitly says publish, and a workspace can block live publishing by agents entirely (Publish safely).

What does it cost to run?

Per article: 5 credits, or 8 with a hero image. Reading, measuring and publishing are free. A content plan costs 20 credits. Plan allowances are on Credits and plans. Our three real test articles for these guides used 23 credits including one refine.

How do I know it is working?

Measure two things, monthly: Google impressions and positions for the new pages, and visits from AI assistants such as ChatGPT. They often disagree. On our site the page Google shows most is not the one ChatGPT sends people to; see LLM SEO: what actually gets cited. If you market a software product, SEO for SaaS shows how we chose the topics the agent writes.
